Children develop by naturally pushing their boundaries further and discovering new things. Along the way, they watch how you handle things as a parent. They basically follow in your footsteps. You help your child by giving them the space to follow their own path (Tao) and to see the consequences of the steps they take. Through play, your child can discover that there are many paths to choose from and that each leads to different outcomes. This way, your child can learn from experience what fits best with their own developmental path (Tao). He will gradually experience that daring to choose your own path goes hand in hand with inner balance (Yin & Yang). Along the way, he learns to understand that the more he can find balance within himself, the less force (Wu wei) he experiences in the outside world. Ecosystemic Taoism focuses on forming a genuine relationship with yourself, others, and your natural environment. It teaches you to stay connected to yourself, so you can also maintain balance (Yin & Yang) in relation to others and your natural environment.
Helping your child in this light is done without pressure and therefore without punishment or rewards. Because that implicitly gives your child the signal that developing is wrong. While your child’s intention is simply that he wants to grow, but he has not experienced most things before, so he will also find out that certain paths are not his way (Tao) because it makes him waver. But also, that some paths just need a bit more experience and actually give the balance (Yin & Yang) that motivates him to keep going. This way, he develops a healthy self-image, which gives him the balance to venture out into the wide world.
